Substantive editing differs from English editing and from Advanced editing. English editing is mostly correcting English grammar at the sentence level - and as such, many times enough. Advanced or Professional editing, in addition, aims to correct the structure of the article, and for instance, reorganizes paragraphs. Our Substantive editing means that we focus on the substance, the scientific content of the article.
We are almost like authors themselves - or many times like supervisors for PhD students.
We help the authors to develop the whole research story. We help to put the research in the scientific context. We help to present the research so that readers will understand, why your article should be read and published. We help you to make interpretations and conclusions and write an interesting discussion.
In practice, we do the same what the authors do in scientific writing.
In practice, we suggest better ways to write, search for mistakes and inconsistencies, help to interpret results, question the interpretations and conclusions. Finally, when we think that the content and the structure are ok, we edit the text according to your preferences. We can also write new paragraphs, search for articles to refer, read the articles and write about them.
We can help the doctoral students with the thesis. We comment the content and give suggestions to improve the text. We can discuss and try to help with all kinds of problems dealing with the thesis.
The time taken for our editing varies a lot and depends on the original quality of the work, as well as on the level wanted. Most often, we give the first comments in the next day. The second round comments may take a few days. The time needed to get the article ready for submission takes often more than three weeks. Because the idea is that you develop the article yourself, we read and give comments maybe three times before the final editing.
Because there is much work for us, our prices are relatively high.
After our substantive editing, you most often don't need to worry about plagiarism. If you are afraid of that, tell us.
English editing by a native speaker costs 0.05 euros per word. If you don't need it, you get a reduction.
We keep editing certificates mostly useless, because no universal quality standards for editing, not even for English editing, exist. If you for some reason need an editing certificate, we can write what we have done. To the best of our knowledge, there is no place to add the certificate in the online submission plattforms of the journals.
We write you a short cover letter. We choose the aspects that we think are important for the editor to know when deciding whether to send your paper to reviewers. We believe that the editors read the Abstract and Conclusions and do not repeat them.
